Robert “Moose” Moss was a renowned diving coach from Colquitt County, Georgia. As a collegiate football player for Georgia Southern University, decorated World War II combat pilot, and farmer, Moss was never a diver but came to admire the sport of diving. In the 1960s, Moss and his wife built a small diving facility on their farm which came to be known as Moss Farms Diving. For a man with no personal diving experience, he was a rarity to have had the success he had coaching diving. In 1985, he was named by USA Diving as the National Age Group Coach of the Year. Since then, USA Diving has honored Moss’ name with the Moose Moss Age Group Coach of the Year Award. Also named after Moss is the YMCA’s Robert “Moose” Moss Award, given to the coach, athlete, or administrator who embodies the values of the YMCA, and best encourages the development and growth of the sport of diving. In 1993, the Moose Moss Aquatic Center was dedicated to Moss. The center has hosted multiple Olympic teams, USA Diving’s National Diving Championships, and the CanAmMex Championship. Moss was also honored posthumously with the Glenn McCormick Memorial Award by USA Diving in 1994. Still to this day, divers from the Moss Farms Diving Tigers have won awards from the local level to the world stage.
